201 Marshall (first married name) Blaisdell, Edith Marie (I3134)

202 Mary Ann McKenna was the third of ten children born to Charles William McKenna and his wife, Bertha Marshall. She was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, and later moved with her family to Manchester, New Hampshire. It was there that she was married to Philip McSweeney on June 20, 1928. In May 1929, Mary Ann gave birth to a stillborn daughter. She had one child who survived birth, Robert Eugene. McKenna, Mary Ann (P1538)

203 Mary Eileen McIver (1910-2000) married John Francis McAvinn (1908- 1982). Eileen (my mother) was born on May 5th, 1910 to Peter D. McIver and Margaret McKenna in Newton PEI. She was the second of thirteen children. At the age of two years old she went to Kinkora to live with her aunt and uncle, Joe and Minnie Campbell. This was to be a temporary arrangement because of the birth of another child but Mom remained there. She went to school in Kinkora, then to Notre Dame Convent in Charlottetown as a boarder and finally graduated as a teacher from Prince of Wales College at the age of nineteen.

Mom taught school for 11years on PEI. Her first school was at Lower Freetown and her last at Stanley Bridge. When she died in 2000 the first bouquet of flowers to come was from the class of 1938 in Stanley Bridge. Mom and Dad were married in Montreal on September 4th, 1940 at Loyola College by Father Reg Johnson who was a cousin of Dad's. Dad had also taught for a number of years on PEI but by then had moved to Ottawa and was working for the Federal Government. Although they lived in Ottawa my mother spent a lot of time back on the Island because of Minnie's health and as a result I was born on the Island in 1943. My two sisters, Joanne and Mary, were born in Ottawa in 1947 and 1951. When Mary started school Mom returned to teaching and taught until she was 65 years old. She loved teaching.

Dad died on January 16th, 1982 unexpectedly of congestive heart failure. Mom remained in her home until the age of 87 years and spent the last 2 ½ years of her life at St. Patrick's Home (where incidentally her sister Bernadine had worked for years). Mom died on February 3, 2000. She was hoping to live long enough to see the new millennium and to reach 90 years old. She achieved the first goal but missed the second by three months. Although she wasn't brought up with her siblings she loved them all and was fiercely loyal to them all. The biggest treat you could give her was a trip to her beloved “Island" and she continued to go well into her eighties. They're missed.

204 Mary Ellen was living in Hampton with her family when her mother died in 1876, she was 15 years of age and the oldest in the family of eight children. Five years later, she was living in with an Aunt and Uncle, Mary and John Mullin, in Indian River (Lot 19) who were also caring for her younger sister, Maggie. By 1881, John and Mary Mullin also had five children of their own ranging in age from 1-5 years of age.

In 1881, Mary Ellen was a school teacher in Lot 19. On July 9, 1883, she married Bernard Fitzsimmons from Long River, Prince Edward Island, Lot 20. They were married in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Indian River. Over the next 10 years, Mary Ellen and Bernard had five children. Mary Ellen died in 1892.

In 1894, Bernard married Mary Jane Bolger of Hope River. This union had 14 children and they continued to live in Long River. There is an extensive family history on the Fitzsimmons Family and parts of it are available in Des McIvor’s McIver Family History published for the 2004 McIver Reunion.

McKenna, Mary Ellen (P1525)

205 Mary Faustina (Tena) McIver was born on April 20th in 1924 in Kinkora, P.E.I. She was the 12th of 13 children born to Margaret Ann McKenna and Peter Damien McIver.

In 1927, when Tena was 3 years old, her mother died and she went to live with relatives – Georgie and Florence Driscoll. Apparently she was doted on and she had fond memories of her time with the Driscolls. When she was 7 years old, she returned to live with her father and step-mother on the family farm. (Peter D had married Annie McGarry in 1930). When she was 15 years old, she and her sister, Ita, went to live with their Aunt Minnie (Peter D's sister) who ran a boarding house.Tena and Ita worked in the boarding house while going to high school.

When Tena graduated from high school, she attended the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1946 (She attended the 50th anniversary on the Island in 1996). Following graduation, she moved to Montreal to nurse and lived with her sisters Adele and Ita.

For the next 10 years, Tena showed great independence of spirit and travelled and nursed in a variety of cities across the country including Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Vancouver. She also nursed at St. Claire's Hospital in Hell's Kitchen, New York City.

At a St. Patrick's Day party, she met John (Shawn) Kenny—an Irish doctor who had immigrated to Canada and had joined the Canadian Air Force as a medical officer. They married on August 25, 1956 and had 3 children. Life as an Air Force family involved a number of moves and they lived in Vancouver, Toronto, Baden (Germany), Montreal, and Ottawa. Tena loved Ottawa and adopted it as her home, but she remained close to her brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews all her life and she brought her family back to the Island every summer for a number of years.

In her retirement, she doted on her 4 grandchildren, played a competitive game of Bridge, took piano lessons, enjoyed her friends, travelled, and volunteered at the Shepherds of Good Hope. Tena was vivacious, energetic, strong, kind, and generous.

Tena died of cancer on May 3, 1998 in Ottawa.

206 Mary Faustina Driscoll was born August 28, 1904 in Freetown, Prince Edward Island, the sixth child to Michael Driscoll and Georgina McIver. At the age of 20 years she followed her aunts, Mary Charles McIver and Damian McIver, to join the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1925 and received the name of Georgetta, a form of her mother’s name.

She made the long journey back to PEI many times to visit her family, her parents, her brother Lorne, her sisters Marion and Georgie, nieces and nephews, her beloved “Island”. This homeland was always a very deep and important part of who Georgetta was!

As a sister, while still a novice, she began her long ministry of teaching. For most of those years, she taught seventh and eight graders with her real specialty being literature. Which came first – her love of reading or the love that developed because of teaching it? It doesn’t really matter because she instilled a love of classic prose and poetry in her students and continued to deepen her love also as she read everything under the sun!

Georgetta had a great thirst for knowledge. She explored many areas. She read contemporary theology, kept current on movements within the church, and was aware of developments in society around the world. She continued throughout her life to seek knowledge and to learn new things.

Georgetta died on February 21, 2000 at Bethany Convent in St. Paul, Minnesota. On March 19, 2000 she would have celebrated her 75 years as a Sister of St. Joseph. Her strong, independent spirit will remain with all.
Driscoll, Mary Faustina (I2331)

207 Mary Frances Gallant was the fourth child born to Francis Gallant and Fanny McIver. She was born in Tignish, Prince Edward Island. She joined her older brother, Charles Boyd Gallant, in California, where she met Alfred Dundas. Alfred was born in Jubbulpore, India in 1895, to William and Mary Sophia Dundas. They returned to Ireland before 1901. Alfred arrived in Montreal, Canada in 1913 on the Royal Edward. In 1926, Frances and Albert were living in Oakland, California. It appears that they settled in Vancouver around January 1931. Alfred passed away in Vancouver, in 1965. Frances appears to have moved to Quebec, where her daughter Frances Marie was living, as this is where she died in 1970. Frances was buried in Kinkora.  Gallant, Mary Frances (I315)

208 Mary Georgina Carlson was born May 22, 1929 in Pasco, Washington. She was the first-born child of Cecil and Emily Monaghan who resided in Trail BC. Emily happened to be in Pasco visiting family when Georgina was ready to be born. They promptly returned to Trail where Georgina lived out her life of 75 years.

‘Geannie’, as she was known to many family and friends, took post-secondary schooling to become a secretary and worked in the offices of Cominco until beginning her family. She married Lloyd Walter Joseph Carlson and they raised four children together in Trail. She always said she ordered 4 children from God, 2 boys and 2 girls, in that order, and that is what she received. She was a true believer in the power of positive thinking.

Lloyd and Georgina also provided a foster home and family environment to a child in need, Annette Jorgenson, for many years. Creating a warm and welcoming family home was a high priority for both Georgina and Lloyd. Their door was always open with a fridge full of garden vegetables from their big back yard and savoury wild meat from Lloyd’s hunting trips. The canner was always in use during harvest season! Camping trips with her family and the families of her brothers John and Chuck and sister Mary created many a happy memory.

Georgina had a love for dancing and music that she shared with Lloyd. They had a fabulous record collection and there are home movies of some wild parties from their younger years! She continued dancing throughout her life. She was a great fan of figure skating and could be heard ‘exclaiming’ from across the house when someone skating on television made a great jump or a tumble. Georgina was also and avid reader and strongly encouraged continuing education in any form to her children.

One sadness in Georgina’s life was the tragic death of her loving father Cecil when she was 9 years old. Although her Mother Emily’s family rallied around the young family, as the oldest of four young children, with a mother whose health was fragile, Georgina’s carefree days were cut short.
She described the saving grace that her faith provided to help her through these dark times. Her faith and the importance she placed on creating and nurturing community would continue to hold high value for her throughout her life. Though she admitted to sometimes struggling to live a life of true compassion and unconditional love, as we all do, her life was committed to striving for this ideal.

Georgina received great joy from her seven grandchildren and her first great grandson, Keegan, whom she was able to meet. She was a very proud Mom and Grandma.

Georgina also loved to travel and along with other destinations, she was able to fulfill a life dream of traveling to the Holy Land on one of her adventures.

Lastly her love for and connection to her homeland of Ireland was abundant and I imagine her now dancing with the leprechauns on the Emerald Isle.

210 Mary Maud McIver (Minnie) was born in Newton, P.E.I. in April 1866. As a child she lost a foot in a farm accident. Her father took her in a horse and buggy to a doctor some miles away with only his hand to stop the bleeding. As a result of this accident, she attended school only in the winter months when she could be driven, because a farmer in those days was too busy in the other seasons. She was 20 years old when she finished a well-rounded education at the one room Newton school.

She studied dressmaking and tailoring. She served for all who came. Many little girls, then, still remember with pride the dresses she made for them. The happy look on their faces was her only reward.

She married Joseph Campbell in 1906 and as she once said there were husbands as good – but none better. When their home in Kinkora was partially finished, she sat on a trunk for a chair and in the winter mornings after breakfast, blew out the kerosene lamp and knit by the light of the fire… energy conservation. Her first earnings were 25 cents for a pair of mittens and the buyer told her she would never be poor. She never was, because she was content with what she had. Her lowly house was open to all from Archbishops to the traveling Indians and their squaws. There was always room at the Inn.

Life for her was never the same after her husband died in 1934. She died in the Charlottetown hospital, August 31, 1945 and was buried in Kinkora cemetery beside her beloved Joseph, a carpenter.

McIver, Mary Maud (P196)

211 Mary Maud was born on August 4, 1892 in Tignish, PEI, the oldest daughter and first of eight surviving children to Frank Gallant and Fanny (Frances) McIver. She learned when she was sixty-five years of age and applied for her pension that her name at birth was registered as Matilda, not Mary Maud. When she was three years old, the family moved to Newton, PEI. She grew up on the farm next door to the homestead of her maternal grandparents and uncle, Peter D McIver. In 1925 she married Parnell McCarville of Maple Plains and became an instant mother to Parnell’s nine-year-old daughter, Edna. Parnell’s first wife, Elizabeth Levinia Shreenan, and oldest child, Francis, had died in 1918 in Vancouver, BC as the result of a bad flu epidemic. They resided in Maple Plains until his death in 1963 when she went to live in Middleton with her son, Lorne and his family.

As a Christian, Mary Maud lived by the gospel, faithful to the plan of God as she knew it. In church and community life she took an active part until her death. She was always kind, cheerful and charitable. Visitors to her home enjoyed her hospitality and cheerfulness which were a source of pleasure to others. In spite of suffering, she seldom complained but placed her trust in God.

Privileged to have a special role in Mary Maud’s life for many years were her son Lorne, his wife and their family. With them she shared precious hours where all expressed their joys, aspirations and anxieties. These hours will be treasured by Lorne’s family.

She died on August 10, 1979 – was free from the limitations and pains of this life to begin a new life of sharing in the things God has in store for those who live with Him.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than riches and gold.”

212 Mary McKeever was the ninth of eleven children born to Hugh McKeever and Mary Quinn. She was born in Newton, Prince Edward Island in 1844 and was thirteen years of age when her father died in 1857. She married John Thomas Mullin from the Kensington area. Based on the date of the birth of their first child, they likely married around 1875 which would leave her in her early thirties.

John and Mary worked a 150-acre farm outside Kensington on which they raised eight children. One of Mary’s older sisters, Anne McKeever McKenna died in 1876 leaving behind eight children. In the 1881 Census, John and Mary have five children of their own and have two of their sister’s children living with them, Maggie (age 14) and Mary (age 20). They later had another three children. There are no living descendants in this family line.

It was only Annie, their oldest daughter, who had a family of her own, however, this is where the family line ended as none of Annie’s children had any children of their own. Annie, and her siblings, Peter, Minnie and George remained in PEI. Lena (Angelina) married and settled in Massachusetts. John Jr. spent part of his time in Massachusetts, however he died in Detroit, Michigan. Charles settled in Vancouver, British Columbia, where his brother Isadore joined him before moving to Los Angeles, California, to train as a dentist. Unfortunately, Isidore died shortly after moving there.

John and Mary were known as successful farmers and attended church at St. Mary’s in Indian River. They were both 74 years of age when they died and they are buried in Indian River. Their farm was inherited by their oldest son, Peter Edwin Mullin.

She soon became active in the Senior Citizens’ Federation, holding offices both locally and provincially. For many years, even up to a year before her death, through her newspaper column, she kept seniors across the province up to date in the activities of the federation.

That Mary had earned a host of friends through her gift of friendship and her gentle sense of humor was very evident in the many tributes paid her at the time of her wake and funeral.

216 Michael Cletus, Clate as he was familiarly known, was born in Newton in 1920, the son of the Peter D. and Margaret Anne (McKenna) McIver.

He attended school in Newton and later owned and operated a farm near the family homestead. In 1948 he sold his farm and moved to Lynn where he resided and worked with Hood Milk Co. for 27 years. He lived in Lynn for most of his working life except for a few years when he resided in Cornwall PEI.

Mullin, Mary Josephine (I3225)

218 My father, John A. McIver, was born in Kinkora, P.E.I. in 1878 and came to California in 1907. He was encouraged to settle in the bay area in California by his cousin, Michael McInnis (see the Harrington family) who lived in Oakland, California.

While studying for his California State Board to teach, he worked as a conductor on a street car in Oakland for one year. He then taught grammar school in San Ramon, California, for two years. They moved to Port Costa in 1913.

In Port Costa, California, he taught school and was also Principal of the grammar school. He was very dedicated to his teaching profession and was also a talented instructor in music and voice. He taught here for 26 years.

For many years he was organist and choir leader in St. Patrick’s Church in Port Costa and also in the neighboring city of Crockett in that parish church.

My mother, Bertha Ellen McIver kept busy raising the family of six children and church activities.

In 1939 my father suffered a fatal heart attack. He was interned at St. Joseph’s cemetery in San Peblo, California. (PS: Death certificate indicates death was caused by Chronic Nephritis. There is also reason to believe he had diabetes).

After my father’s death my mother stayed on in the family home visiting her family from time to time.
In 1954 she took seriously ill and was hospitalized in Martinez, California, had surgery and passed away. She was interned in St. Joseph’s in San Pablo, California.

219 My father, Louis McIver, was born in Newton, P.E.I. where he was educated in the local one room schoolhouse that had no indoor plumbing and was heated by a coal stove in the winter. Around 1910 he left home and settled in the C.P.R. Town of Aroostook Jct. N.B. Rail traffic north, south, and into the state of Maine was very busy in those years and he decided to open a grocery and dry goods store in 1917. He was not disappointed because the employees of the C.P.R. gave him most of their business for the next fifty years.

In 1937 the store was destroyed by fire. He bought a farm and for the next four years he worked on the land and operated a small store as a side line. In 1941 he sold the farm, bought a new building, and returned to the store business full time.

In 1932 my grandparents moved from Newton to Aroostook Jct. to be with my father and to care for Arnold and myself. My grandfather built and operated a fox ranch and my grandmother not only looked after the house but fed many hoboes riding the trains during the depression of the 1930’s.

The presence of my grandparents (mama and papa as they were affectionately known) in Aroostook Jct. attracted other family members like Alberta, Nora and Jim. Nora and Alberta helped my father in the store and Jim worked on the railroad. In 1939 my grandparents returned to P.E.I. taking my brother Arnold and me with them.

As dad’s store was on the main highway through New Brunswick he was often visited by many a relative and sometimes just by a fellow Islander noting his store sign. All were welcomed and offered meals and lodging. He treasured these visits in his heart as he loved to hear about his beloved Island.

In 1967 he sold his Aroostook store, moved to Plaster Rock, N.B. and opened up another small grocery store. It was in this store that he died May 7, 1973 and he is buried in St. Malachy’s Cemetery, Kinkora, P.E.I.

My mother, Genevieve Armstrong, was born in 1905 in Perth, N.B. After the marriage separation in February, 1930 she enrolled in the commercial class at Mount Carmel Academy, Saint John, N.B. She graduated in 1931 and her first employer was S.G. Mooney, Barrister and Solicitor, in Perth, N.B. In 1941 she was appointed Deputy Registrar of Deeds. Mother played the piano and during the years that she lived in Perth, she was the organist at her church in Andover.

In 1942 she accepted a position with the Armstrong Brothers, General Contractors, Perth, N.B. One day in 1945, mother told Charlie Armstrong that we should have a hospital in Perth. Charlie responded “I will give the land and a building if you will be the organizer”. Since mother knew the Superior of the Catholic convent in Chatham, N.B. she wrote to her and asked if she would be interested in starting a hospital in Perth. The first hospital in Perth was located in one of Charlie’s buildings, 1947, and I remember visiting it. A bigger hospital was built a few short years later. The 50th anniversary was celebrated May 29, 1997, the day my mother died. Mother remained with the Armstrong Brothers until June, 1956.

In the same year mother accepted a position with Levines Ltd., Fredericton, N.B. as office manager and accountant. She remained with the company until her retirement in 1978. Mother returned to her place of birth and enjoyed 19 years of retirement before her death on May 29, 1997. She is buried in the Catholic cemetery in Andover, N.B.

My parents remained single for the rest of their lives.

220 My mother, Mary Genevieve McIver was the third youngest child of Theodore (TA) McIver and Adella Johnson, born on May 19, 1909 in Kinkora P.E.I. She lived in Kinkora until her father retired and they moved to Summerside, where her mother ran a boarding house. It was there that she met my father Mark Hagan from Kelly’s Cross. During their five-year courtship, my father had left the Island due to problems with Asthma. After settling in Toronto, he sent for my mother, where they were married at St. Basil Church in 1942. My sister Diane was born on August 20, 1943 and I came along on August 6, 1946. When I was around 2 years old, they returned to the Island, where my father worked as a barber in Charlottetown until his death on March 19, 1958.

In 1959, my mother married James McGuigan. He was also from Kinkora and the stepson of M.J. McIver. With that marriage I inherited 3 stepbrothers Mark, Len, and Desi and a stepsister Niona. Desi and I were just 6 weeks apart in age, so it was like having a twin brother. Mom and Jim lived in Charlottetown until around 1963 when they moved back to Toronto. At the time, Diane was living in Toronto and I was finishing my last year of school at Notre Dame Convent in Charlottetown. My mother followed in her mother’s footsteps and ran a boarding house both in Charlottetown and Toronto. She passed away in Toronto on March 25, 1975 and was brought back to Kinkora to be buried beside my father.

My mother had a great sense of humor and enjoyed people. I remember while living in Charlottetown, every Sunday night Al and Mary would come in from the country to visit. We would always make the lunch before they arrived, so that no one would miss mom’s favorite TV show Bonanza, as she would not want them to leave without having a snack.

Also a story my mom shared with me was, before she was married she went to Boston to work, cooking for nuns at a convent. When she arrived she asked “What time is morning Mass?” They replied “Oh, we are not Catholic Nuns”. As the story goes she told them she could not stay. That good Catholic upbringing.

244 OBITUARY:

July 1934

MICHAEL P. DRISCOLL

His many friends throughout Prince Country were shocked and surprised to hear of the death, on Friday morning, June 29, of Michael P. Driscoll at his home in Summerside, P.E.I., after five weeks’ illness. Mr.Driscoll was well and favorably known to the traveling public, having been a C.N.R. Station Agent at the Freetown Station for 37 years, and was held in high favor with the C.N.R. management. About five years ago, owing to ill health, he retired from active service, removing to Summerside with his family, where he has since resided. He was in his 65th year, a good Christian man, and devout Catholic, receiving the last rites of Holy Mother Church in his last hours from Rev.Bennet McDonald, who was with him frequently during his last illness. He was born in Cape Traverse, P.E.I., and was the son of the late John Driscoll and Mary Deegan. He leaves to mourn the loss of a kind husband and devoted father, his widow Georgenia McIvor, two sons and seven daughters. Namely: John S., teacher in this Province; Lorne, a student at St.Dunstan’s University, Charlottetown; Kathleen, Georgenia, Florence, and Katherine, at home; Emily (Mrs.Cecil Monaghan), Trail, BC; Mary (Sr.St.Georgetta), St.Paul, Minn., and Marion, also in Trail, B.C., (Sister Georgetta and Marion were unable to be with their father before his death). He leaves also three sisters, Mrs.V.J.Harrington, Summerside; Mrs.John F.O’Connor, Carleton, and Mrs.James Mulligan, Cape Traverse, as well as three grandchildren, children of Mr. and Mrs.Cecil Monaghan, Trail.

The funeral took place from his residence in Summerside to St.Malachi’s Church, Kinkora, where burial mass was celebrated by Rev.M.Smith, after which all that was mortal of a loyal friend and upright citizen, was laid to rest beside his first born son, Willie Driscoll. The pall-bearers were: Hon. A.E.McLean, M.P., Wm.Noonan, A.A.Scales, E.P.Foley, T.L.Compton, and William Deegan.

Sorrow for the dead seems to be the only sorrow from which we refuse to be divorced. Every other wound we seek to heal, every other affliction to forget, but this wound we consider a duty to keep open. These words aptly describe the tie of melancholy affection that binds us to our beloved dead, though gone from us by death we fancy that we can hear the gentle fall of their muffled footsteps as they silently glide along the hallowed halls of memory, and in our hearts we build a shrine wherein we inscribe their names, and to which we go from worldly distractions to live once more amid the scenes made memorable by their presence. There we love to recall their presence. There we love to recall their virtues, or to hear again their kindly voices now stilled in death; till our hearts grow tender, and our tears fall anew, until we realize what a hollow mockery is all our musing, for it cannot bring back the friend we have lost. Those thoughts bring back in reminiscence the form and face of our dear departed friend, M.P.Driscoll, His faults, if faults he had, have gone the way of oblivion, while his many excellent traits of character stand forth in high relief from the well filled background of affectionate memory.

He was a man of simple and strong faith who never made an unnecessary parade of his religious convictions. In the last days of his illness death seemed to hold no terrors for him, but with the faith of the Catholic gentleman that he was, he settled all his worldly affairs, with hope and confidence in a merciful Judge, and when the end at last came it was with a touch so gentle that his family and friend who knelt beside his dying beside scarcely knew his soul had taken flight. He had passed into another state of existence, and then we realize that: "Between us and you there is a fixed chaos, so that they who would pass from hence to you, cannot, nor from thence come hither."

We may ask, "If in that moment of dissolution, did he retain an impression of the eager love that strove to keep him with us?" Who knows?

V.J.Harrington.

264 OBITUARY:
Corcoran, James of Dedham; formerly of Casselton and Fargo, North Dakota. Jim, a beloved professor at Simmons University for 35 years, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2021.

James Corcoran received the best gift a journalist could possibly receive the day he graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University with a master’s degree in public administration in 1986: his first book contract.

As a reporter for the The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, North Dakota’s largest newspaper, Jim wrote a Pulitzer Prize-nominated series of articles on Gordon Kahl, a leading member of the right-wing group Posse Comitatus. Kahl was a farmer, a decorated Korean war hero, and a grandfather. He was also a sharp-shooting tax evader who murdered two federal marshals during a confrontation near Medina, North Dakota, in 1983. Jim grew up in nearby Casselton, and Kahl’s life provided a window into the White supremacy angst percolating in the Plains. Jim’s Kennedy School adviser encouraged him to turn the articles into a book.

Seven years later, Viking published Bitter Harvest: Gordon Kahl and the Posse Comitatus: Murder in the Heartland. On the day of publication, Casselton’s mayor proclaimed May 29, 1990 “Jim Corcoran Day.” Reviewers called the book “A haunting portrait of the netherworld of extremism.” It touched such a nerve among extremists that Jim received threats from the Ku Klux Klan. Thirty-one years later, it remains a touchstone chronicling the dangers of domestic terrorism. The book also gave Jim a delightful Hollywood moment. It became the basis for the made-for-television movie, In the Line of Duty: Manhunt in the Dakotas, starring Rod Steiger and Michael Gross. Jim appeared in a cameo as a sheriff slapping handcuffs on Gordon Kahl’s wife.

James Patrick Corcoran died October 27 at his home in Dedham. The cause was neck cancer. He was 68. Jim, often known as “Corky,” was born August 11, 1953 in Moorhead, Minnesota. His father, Kenneth Muir Corcoran, worked as a railroad carpenter. Jim’s mother, Brenda (Kettle) Corcoran, a homemaker, was originally from Wales.

At age 11, Jim published his first book. It was a 35–page, handwritten effort called The History of World War II. It cost 25 cents. He actually sold some copies, but ceased publication when writer’s cramp set in. Jim graduated from Central Cass High School in 1971. Believing he would be drafted to Vietnam, he traveled around Europe for a year. Upon his return, he enrolled at the University of North Dakota, where he excelled at playing second base for the baseball team.

Jim’s journalism career began when he edited the school’s newspaper while earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science. After graduation, he took a job at The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead. During his 10 years as an award-winning investigative reporter at The Forum, and as a stringer/correspondent for Newsweek, he authored more than 1,500 news and feature stories.

In 1985, a Bush Foundation Fellowship led Jim east to the Kennedy School to continue his education. With the convergence of graduation and his book contract, he needed a job to support his writing. He applied for and accepted a one-year writing instructor’s position in the communications department at Simmons University, a college in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. That one year became a 35-year career that ended with Jim’s retirement and was appointment as an Associate Professor Emeritus.

At Simmons, passion, enthusiasm, and integrity infused Jim’s teaching and his interactions with colleagues. His disarming smile often smoothed his words when he asked students for one more re-write. Former student Elizabeth Carr, who worked for several years at The Boston Globe, remembers Jim as “ruthless in his editing.” Carr notes Jim’s mantra: “The simplest language is always the best way to explain complex ideas,” and that he “made me truly understand what my voice could do.” Current student Isabelle Indelicato says Jim “taught me how to think critically, be curious, and write with integrity.”

Jim chaired the communications department for 17 years, teaching classes on journalism, feature writing, opinion writing, the media, the Fifth Amendment, always imploring his students to understand the power of the pen. When Jim was promoted to Professor, colleague Bob White noted “It is time to reward him for the fire in his eyes and the lightning that God put in his spirit.”

Jim served as an adviser to the student newspaper, revamped the journalism program, and established the university’s internet radio station, The Shark, among other accomplishments. Jim put his own pen back to work after the Oklahoma City bombing, charting the rise of home-grown, right-wing hate groups in Gathering Storm: America’s Militia Threat, co-written with Morris Dees, the founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center. That made Jim a media go-to for comments on such groups and the United Nations listed him on its “Roster of Experts on Terrorism and Related Phenomena.”

Jim met his wife, Carolyn Shute, a double alumnae and former employee of Simmons, in 1995. The two married in 2008. One thing Jim was proudest of in his life was shepherding Carolyn through her double-lung transplant in 2014.

When not teaching, Jim enjoyed reading history and politics, devoured thrillers and mysteries, solved crossword puzzles with gusto–in ink!, played a pretty good game of golf, and enthusiastically cooked anything that was made with ground beef: meatloaf, meatballs, shepherd’s pie, chili, and hamburgers. He was an avid–and usually long-suffering–fan of Minnesota Twins baseball and Minnesota Vikings football.

Jim loved summer trips to Prince Edward Island, hoped to golf in the southwest, see Portugal, and revisit France. Most of all, he loved to linger around the dinner table with good friends and good wine, passionately discussing politics or the issues of the day, voice booming and expressive hands flying. He exuded optimism despite his terminal diagnosis.

Jim followed Mary Oliver’s “Instructions for Living a Life” when the poet advises “pay attention/be astonished/tell about it.” Jim’s curiosity and gifts as a storyteller shaped his journalistic practice, animated his classroom, and won the allegiance of colleagues and earned many friends.

Jim was pre-deceased by his father, Kenneth (Muir) Corcoran. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Shute, whom he considered his greatest blessing; his mother Brenda Corcoran; sisters Kathy (Kenneth) Tolzman; Francie (Robert) Albaugh; Jeanne (Michael) Shannon; Pam (Jarett) Gregerson; and brother John Corcoran. He also leaves his sister-in-law Susan Shute Crowe, brother-in-law Richard (Lorna) Shute, eight nephews and five nieces, and many friends who became extended family.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for the first weekend in December. More information to come when available.

284 OBITUARY:
Margaret “Edie” Reyno, beloved wife, mother and nana passed away on November 16, 2022 due to Alzheimer’s Disease at age 84. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, John Reyno; their two daughters, Tiffany Reyno, and Tara (Tom) Ritchie, and her granddaughter Simone Ritchie; brothers Joe (Eileen) McIvor and Alan (Shirley) McIvor and 5 nieces and a nephew. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Margaret McIvor, brothers Desmond and Clifford (Skip) McIvor and daughter Tristan. Edie will be remembered for her open heart, generosity of spirit and seemingly infinite ability to care for and advocate for others. She was known for making friends with strangers, and her good-byes were often longer than her visits. Edie was born July 27th, 1938, in a small town in Borden, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was the second oldest and only daughter of 5 children. Her hometown, her family, and her church next door became the root of so many of the values that she carried with her throughout her life. As a young woman she met John on a blind date. However, at the time, she was more serious about her career than dating, and decided to become a traveling nurse that led her to Arizona. She eventually went back to Canada, became engaged and then married John and then started her family and life in Arizona. After their daughters were born, Edie took the nursing night shift so she could be home with her girls during the day. She always prioritized what was important to her and was home for her daughters to hear about their days and to be there for her husband. Being present was something she always prided herself in. However, she was always busy, starting learning disability classes at our school, championing for the underprovided, always being there for those in need. Later, when her children were older, Edie went back to school and earned her Master’s degree in Psychology which she then put to use helping and serving others mostly in pro bono fashion. This was another beautiful reflection of her generosity and strong desire to give. Edie was usually on the go meeting friends and pursing hobbies including the gym, tennis and golf and you could always find her in church on Sundays. She loved time with family and friends, especially her only granddaughter, Simone. Edie will always be remembered for her incredible warmth and her smile that could light up a room.
