324 Our lives changed forever on October 25, 1990. Our father died that day after a battle with cancer. He was the best dad any child ever had. We will never be quite the same.

We would like to remember our father, Michael Joseph Charles Monaghan, born February12th, 1931 in Trail, B.C.

A graduate of Saint Dunstan University in PEI with a Bachelor of Commerce and Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia with a Bachelor of Education, he served in the Canadian Navy Reserves for eight years as a sub-lieutenant.

He started his career as a public school teacher at Summerside High School. Dad taught business. He was a much admired teacher during those years. He coached basketball at the school. He later joined the government as a civil servant in the income tax dept and climbed his way to the top. Finishing his career as Director of Consumer Corporate Affairs for B.C. and the Yukon.

As a father, he was tough and uncompromising. Dad was a different breed, quiet and unassuming. My brother & sister and I knew that any missteps of ours carried inevitable consequences. But he was more selfless and thoughtful than anyone I have known throughout my life.

Dad was a great believer of lists. The shopping list was a great example. If it was on the list it got bought; if not it would have to wait for next time. He never caught on that my then girlfriend, now wife was adding all her favorite foods to the list until one day she asked for a puppy.

He didn’t know how to cook for just two people, with Dad it was twenty-two or nothing.

He read the Province cover to cover nearly every day with his morning coffee & muffin.

Sunday dinner was roast and potatoes and a board games before bed. That was my dad.

Watching the father we loved slowly deteriorate, was heartbreaking for our family, because no matter how hard we wished for it, he wasn't going to get better. When he died, a part of us died as well. So many times in my life I could have used his advice. When I feel especially sad, I tell myself that I was truly blessed to have had such a loving and gentle father. I can never thank him enough for all of the things he taught me, and for all of the wonderful memories he has given me to treasure.

He would want us to go on with our lives, to be happy and productive, to enjoy watching our children grow into good and decent human beings. Dad never got to see his grandchildren, but we keep Grandpa Chuck’s memory alive for them, as we know he is watching over them.

Rest in peace.

325 Owen McKeever was initially believed to be the third of eleven children born to Hugh McKeever and Mary Quinn, born in 1831. However, a baptismal record was located at Old St. Joseph’s Church in Philadelphia, which indicates that he was born on January 10, 1827, and baptized on January 20, 1827. He returned to Ireland with his parents, and would have been twelve years old when his parents, once again, crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1839 to settle in Newton, Prince Edward Island.

Like the other members of the family, Owen would have been an active member of the settlement clearing and development.

When his father died in 1857, he was provided with Farm Number Three. The 1880 Meacham Atlas shows he had two properties. One of these properties in the Atlas had a building located on it. This first property is the farm that later would be inherited by Annie Kelly McCarville. The second property is the field on the southwest side of the crossroads.

Owen died in 1883. Owen is buried beside his father’s close friend, Bernard McCourt, in St. Malachy’s Cemetery in Kinkora.

347 Pauline McKenna was the 12th child born to Charles William McKenna and Bertha Marshall, on July 31, 1909. When she was 20 years old, she was living with her sister, Laura, in Washington, D.C., working as a secretary in a doctor’s office. Pauline never married. When she retired, she was working as an Office Secretary at the US Veterans’ Hospital. Pauline died in a two-car crash on Route 101 in Auburn, New Hampshire, on Saturday, November 23, 1968. She and her sister, Bertha, were both killed in the accident, and another sister, Laura, was hospitalized.  McKenna, Pauline Theresa (P1541)

350 Peter D. McIver was born in Newton, P.E.I. in April, 1880. He was the youngest child in a family of ten children. He resided on the original McIver homestead where his mother, Emily Harrington, had resided. With his wife Margaret McKenna they raised a family of thirteen children. Being an active farmer he purchased two nearby farms. When once asked how he became so successful, he replied “I guess just hard work and some good management”. As an added interest he raised foxes for a short time.

During his lifetime, Peter D. had many challenges and misfortunes to cope with. Despite the burning of a barn and loss of its contents, he quickly rebuilt the barn in 1930 and in 1940 he replaced the old homestead with the present residence of his son Eugene. One of the greatest misfortunes he suffered was the sudden death in 1927 of his wife Margaret, leaving him to cope with the raising of thirteen children, one of whom, Joseph, was killed in World War II. In 1930 he married Annie McGarry who assisted him in all aspects of life until her death in 1953.

Annie was born in 1884 in Montague Cross, PE, to Peter McGarry (born 1841 in County Monaghan, Ireland) and Mary Cain in Vernon River. Prior to her marriage to Peter D she worked for the Parish Priest in Kinkora, Father Smith. She had served Father Smith in her home community of Iona and came with him when he was transferred to Kinkora. She died in 1953, at home, after suffering a massive stroke.

Despite these trials, Peter D’s Catholic faith was able to sustain him in these ups and downs of life, and because of his good farming methods, was able to offer to his children, the means of an education which allowed some of these children to pursue careers in the teaching and nursing profession. His death on November 29, 1961 at the Charlottetown Hospital came quietly and peacefully. After his death in his will there were bequeaths left to Welfare Agencies, several Island priests, and the immediate family. The family in return donated a gold chalice in his memory to St. Malachy’s Church, Kinkora, P.E.I.

351 Peter McIver was the seventh child born to Hugh McKeever and Mary Quinn. He was born in November 1839 on Prince Edward Island, which is confirmed by his baptismal record from November 24, 1839 at St. Dunstan’s Basilica, which noted that he was 10 days old when he was baptized. It was previously thought that Peter was born in Ireland, until the baptismal record was located for Peter in Prince Edward Island. In the record, his name is shown as Peter McEver.

Peter was eighteen years old when his father died in 1857. Hugh’s will stipulated that Farm No. One on Lot 26 was to go to his wife Mary and that on her death the farm and contents were to be divided between Peter and Michael. However, the 1880 Meacham Atlas indicated that John had ownership of the original homestead as well as the farm he received in the will.

The 1881 Census shows that Peter was living with his brother Michael, at Michael’s farm in Hampton (Lot 29). Following his brother Owen’s death, Peter and Susan were residing on Lot 26, and in 1886, they welcomed a two-year-old youngster into their home, Annie Kelly, daughter of their sister and her husband, Margaret McIver and Francis Kelly. Annie remained in this home all her life.

In 1911, Annie married John A. McCarville, who grew up on the farm next door. Susan died in 1918 and Peter died in 1921. When Peter died, he willed the farm to Annie Kelly McCarville. Peter, Susan, Annie and John are buried together in St. Malachy’s Cemetery in Kinkora, Prince Edward Island.

374 Ray was born in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan in 1913, the second child and son of Eugene and Clara McIver. His father was a carpenter and the family moved around a lot seeking employment. They moved to Butte, Montana shortly after his sister Mary was born, and his father obtained work in the coal mines. It was there, they survived a smallpox epidemic, took sick and dying miners into their home, and his father survived being buried alive in a mine collapse. But tragedy struck again with dire consequences, at the age of 5 his beloved mother succumbed to the flu epidemic of 1918, two weeks after giving birth to Joseph, leaving his father with 5 children under the age of 7 to raise. As it was hard to raise these young children on his own, he sought assistance from his sister Margaret and husband Bill Slavin in California. They were childless at the time and willingly took Irene age 2 and baby Joseph into their care. Ray, Leo and Mary moved around with their father, eventually settling in Boston, Mass. Ray did his schooling in Boston up to Grade 7. It was here that his love of reading and learning blossomed under the mentorship of his cousin Sister Mary Henry. The family returned to PEI and his father married Beatrice Dufffy. Ray completed the next 3 years of schooling in one year. He had always wanted to be a doctor but for whatever reasons most likely financial, being the Depression, he went instead to Prince of Wales College where he obtained his teaching certificate. He began at the age of 18 teaching in a one room school at Maple Plains, PEI. He taught grades one to ten. In 1936, along with his brother Leo, he moved to Trail, B.C. to seek employment in the rumored construction of the southern Trans Canada Highway. Needless to say this project never occurred and he spent his first couple of years working cutting and hauling firewood to the residents of Trail. He eventually was hired on at the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company as an electrical apprentice. He met the love of his life at baseball game and they were married in September of 1940. Daughter Jocelyn was born in 1941 and son Raymond 1n 1943 and daughter Patricia in 1947. In 1942 he could no longer ignore the war that was devastating Europe and he joined the RCAF and trained as a pilot, receiving his wings in Sept. 1943. He no sooner finished this training when he was approached to train as a navigator, as there was an extreme shortage of qualified men to do this task. During this time his wife and Jocelyn travelled back and forth across Canada with him until he was shipped overseas, where he remained stationed out of England until the wars end. Dorothy returned to Trail to give birth to Ray Jr. This was a very lonely time for him and he saw the worst of the worst. He rarely talked of the horrors he saw and could not understand how people could sit around and tell war stories. This gentle man was finally returned home to his loving family after spending 6 months at Rockford, Ontario, recovering from what today we refer to as post traumatic syndrome but then was called "shell shock". Two years later the family moved to Castlegar and daughter Patricia was born and he began his life anew as a good father and husband. He raised his family well, nurturing his strong faith in the Catholic Church and instilling it in his children. About 9 years later, suffering again the effects of the war, he developed a problem with alcohol; suffering for 3 years. With his strong faith in God and his love of his family, he overcame this disability and gave up alcohol for the rest of his life. In his 50's he decided he would like to return to the teaching profession and went on to earn his Bachelor of Education degree from Notre Dame University. He then continued in the field of education until his retirement at age 65. He loved to teach and always said he would continue long past retirement age if he could. While in his 60's he again took up Electrical contracting with his son-in-law until he was again forced to retire due to illness. He enjoyed skiing, prospecting, travelling and being with his grandchildren. Ray was very well liked as a person and is still fondly remembered by many of his former students and friends. He had an infectious sense of humour and sense of adventure. If someone acted up he would say “Don’t be a blood alley” and we never completely understood what it meant. He was a lifelong learner and never thought that age should be a barrier to anything and that was how he lived his life.

As his youngest daughter Patricia, I will always remember my father. He was a good father to me. He taught me my religion, the most important thing in my life, and how to remember why we are here. He was young enough to teach me to ski, skate, fish, drive a car and how to be a good person. Many times he would say “If you can’t say anything good about someone, don’t say anything at all”. He also said “Today is today, yesterday is gone, tomorrow never was”. Live in the present for now is all the time you need. Guilt, smilt was his answer, when I said “but I feel guilty”. He was a very fair father. He gave the same love to all three of his children. I never heard any of us complain for lack of his love. I always felt that he was there for me. Most people loved my father. His personality was fun and was always very friendly. One of the greatest gifts that he gave to me was that he loved my mother. He always put her first. Theirs was a love affair all their life. He always took care of his family and loved his grandchildren. I am sorry that he never met my grandchildren, as they would have loved him, too. He grew up without his mother, but I know that she would have been proud of the person he became. I was proud to have him as my father. He died too soon and all us that were touched by his life have a void that will never be filled. I will miss him until I die. He was a beautiful man inside and out and I am proud to have had him as my father.

As the oldest of our family I have many memories both sad and funny about my father. He was always a very loving man even during the turbulent times of his struggle with alcohol. Family was everything to Dad as evidenced by our countless time spent together swimming, picnicking, fishing and other activities already enumerated by Pat. My dad had a remarkable ability to read and remember with little effort poetry that he loved; he would recite many of the poems by Robert Service and keep you spellbound reciting The Lady of the Lake form beginning to end without a flaw. He had many sayings that he imparted to us all the time but the one I remember most is that "if you don't have anything good to say about a person don't say anything'". He taught me many things as he did Ray and Pat so I will not repeat what they have already said only ditto. but the greatest thing he taught me was always to have faith in myself and to live life to it fullest "God put you here to love and enjoy life". He grew up motherless, but always remembered her with undying love and devotion and in the 1970's had her rejoined with him in the Kinkora cemetery. He never lived as long as he hoped and never got to love his great and great great children but my own grandchildren speak of him with a love as if they know him. I had the privilege of being with him along with my mother when he died; he met death bravely the day after completing a novena of good Fridays. There is no one that can ever fill the gap in my life that he left. Memories of him coming after me chasing pigeons in Winnipeg , taking me in the horse and buggy at Grandpa's to attending my nursing graduation and the pride he had in us will never fade. I love you Dad and will always miss you.

All three of his children agree we could not have asked for a better father and were truly blessed to have had him.

377 Rhonda was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Wildlife Biology. She was an accomplished wildlife artist interested in spiders, reptiles, polar bears, and amphibians. While living in Oregon, she and her husband, Donald “Kit” Crump Jr, both wildlife biologists, conducted habitat surveys on the endangered spotted owl while employed by the Bureau of Land Management. Prior to that, she worked with the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. At the time of her death, she was pursuing a degree in landscape horticulture at Cabrillo College. Rhonda died on March 1, 1995 in a hiking accident near her home in Santa Cruz, California.  Smith, Rhonda Paige (I65)

378 Robert McSweeney was the only child born to Mary Ann McKenna and Philip McSweeney. Robert was ordained in 1959 and was a Trappist Priest under the name of Father Placid.

In the monastery, Father McSweeney and the other monks produced jams and jellies labeled “Trappist Preserves” to help ensure that the monastery is self-supporting and not dependent upon donations. This was done in addition to the order’s main source of income, making liturgical vestments through the Holy Rood Guild.

395 Sister Clara Eugene was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1915, the middle child of five children to Eugene McIver and Clara Clarkin McIver. She was three years old when her mother died in 1918. The two younger children – Irene and Joseph were placed in the care of Eugene’s sister, Margaret Gertrude Slavin. The Slavin family lived in California and contact seems to be lost with this branch of the family.

Eugene, with the help of his second wife, Beatrice Duffy, raised Sister Clara Eugene and her two brothers, Leo and Ray, in Kinkora while working as a painter.

At the age of twenty years (1935) she joined the Sisters of Charity in Halifax. Over the years she worked in Halifax, North Sydney, Quebec City and at the Halifax Infirmary in Halifax, N.S in various household departments. It is in Halifax where she was diagnosed with cancer and died on November 27, 1959 at the early age of forty-four years. She is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Halifax.

396 Sister Damian McIver (Faustina McIver) was the daughter of John McIver and Emily Harrington, born October 1, 1873, at Newton, Prince Edward Island, the seventh of ten children.

Sister Damian, as she was later called in religious life, entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet at St. Paul, MN, on August 27, 1900. She made her final profession of vows on August 15, 1910.

Sister Damian taught school before she entered the Community. With this advanced experience it was fitting that she dedicates her religious life to the cause of Catholic education. As a young Sister she was assigned to teach elementary grades where she labored with marked success working on the various grade levels until 1932. She was principal of St. Luke’s School from 1929-1932. It was, however, in grade eight that Sister seemed most needed, and for many years she was assigned that particular grade. Her work at the high school level began at St. Mary’s School in Morris, Minnesota in 1932. She taught high school in Graceville, Minnesota, the Academy of the Holy Angels, Minneapolis, and St. John’s Academy, Jamestown, North Dakota.

As a teacher Sister Damian was much loved by students and their parents, many of whom came to Bethany for short visits during her final years. Sister Damian had a brilliant mind and the ability of getting her point across to those most difficult to reach. She brought to her students not only the necessary preparation and the required knowledge, but a personality pleasing and attractive. Her grace of manner and interest in her work left an imprint on all with whom she came in contact. Sister was a truly dedicated teacher, firm but understanding. Her kindness and motherly concern won the love and cooperation of her young charges

Finally, because of ill health and advancing year in 1954, Sister Damian retired to Bethany Convent, St. Paul, where she remained until her death on October 29, 1963, in the sixty-first year of her religious life. Sister Damian’s own devoted sister, Sister Mary Charles, of Bethany was constantly at her side, and her four nieces, all of whom are Sisters of St. Joseph were among the pallbearers. Her remains were laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery, St. Paul, Minnesota.

399 Sister Mary Charles McIver (Emily McIver) was the daughter of John McIver and Emily Harrington, born April 11, 1876, at Newton, Prince Edward Island, the eighth of ten children.

In 1899, while still very young, she took the long journey to St. Paul, Minnesota, where she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Like many another valiant soul from the same Island, once she had put her hand to the distant plow, she had never a thought of looking back to the distant joys she left behind.

While still a novice, Sister resided at St. Agatha’s Conservatory and taught for two years at St. Joseph’s School. Her entire life, except for these two years of teaching was spent in the Health Care field.

From 1902 to 1920 she lived at St. Joseph Hospital, St. Paul, as a nurse in training, then as a floor supervisor, and after 1915 as superintendent of nurses. For the next nineteen years she served as superintendent of the following hospitals: St. Michael’s, Grand Forks; Our Lady of Lourdes, Pasco, WA; St. Mary’s in Tucson, Arizona and in Fargo, North Dakota from 1936 until 1939.

For the next seventeen years, Sister Mary Charles resided at the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul; enjoying the first year of this period as a sabbatical leave mixed with a fair degree of generous professional help as a prelude to sixteen years of generous labor as head of the Health Service at that institution.

As a nurse, Sister was kind, solicitous, and very understanding. As a religious, she was completely dedicated to the divine service to which at an early age she had resolutely offered herself.

In 1956, Sister retired to Bethany Convent, St. Paul, where she died on July 26, 1966, at the age of 90 years, in the sixty-seventh year of her religious life. She was laid to rest beside her sister, Sister Damian, in Resurrection Cemetery, St. Paul.
