Philip C. Shute of Brockton, a veteran, former teacher and retired business owner, died Tuesday at Beth Israel Hospital. He was 80.

Mr. Shute grew up in Hyde Park.

Mr. Shute graduated from Bridgewater State Teacher’s College. He then taught in the Randolph public schools for 12 years.

His love of history and interest in antiques eventually led him to leave teaching and start his own business, Shute Auction Gallery, originally opened in Norwell and later in Brockton.
