• Name	Mary Maud Matilda Gallant
  	Mary Maud was born on August 4, 1892 in Tignish, PEI, the oldest daughter and first of eight surviving children to Frank Gallant and Fanny (Frances) McIver. She learned when she was sixty-five years of age and applied for her pension that her name at birth was registered as Matilda, not Mary Maud. When she was three years old, the family moved to Newton, PEI. She grew up on the farm next door to the homestead of her maternal grandparents and uncle, Peter D McIver. In 1925 she married Parnell McCarville of Maple Plains and became an instant mother to Parnell’s nine-year-old daughter, Edna. Parnell’s first wife, Elizabeth Levinia Shreenan, and oldest child, Francis, had died in 1918 in Vancouver, BC as the result of a bad flu epidemic. They resided in Maple Plains until his death in 1963 when she went to live in Middleton with her son, Lorne and his family. As a Christian, Mary Maud lived by the gospel, faithful to the plan of God as she knew it. In church and community life she took an active part until her death. She was always kind, cheerful and charitable. Visitors to her home enjoyed her hospitality and cheerfulness which were a source of pleasure to others. In spite of suffering, she seldom complained but placed her trust in God. Privileged to have a special role in Mary Maud’s life for many years were her son Lorne, his wife and their family. With them she shared precious hours where all expressed their joys, aspirations and anxieties. These hours will be treasured by Lorne’s family. She died on August 10, 1979 – was free from the limitations and pains of this life to begin a new life of sharing in the things God has in store for those who live with Him. “A good name is to be chosen rather than riches and gold.”
