- Mary Georgina Carlson was born May 22, 1929 in Pasco, Washington. She was the first-born child of Cecil and Emily Monaghan who resided in Trail BC. Emily happened to be in Pasco visiting family when Georgina was ready to be born. They promptly returned to Trail where Georgina lived out her life of 75 years.
‘Geannie’, as she was known to many family and friends, took post-secondary schooling to become a secretary and worked in the offices of Cominco until beginning her family. She married Lloyd Walter Joseph Carlson and they raised four children together in Trail. She always said she ordered 4 children from God, 2 boys and 2 girls, in that order, and that is what she received. She was a true believer in the power of positive thinking.
Lloyd and Georgina also provided a foster home and family environment to a child in need, Annette Jorgenson, for many years. Creating a warm and welcoming family home was a high priority for both Georgina and Lloyd. Their door was always open with a fridge full of garden vegetables from their big back yard and savoury wild meat from Lloyd’s hunting trips. The canner was always in use during harvest season! Camping trips with her family and the families of her brothers John and Chuck and sister Mary created many a happy memory.
Georgina had a love for dancing and music that she shared with Lloyd. They had a fabulous record collection and there are home movies of some wild parties from their younger years! She continued dancing throughout her life. She was a great fan of figure skating and could be heard ‘exclaiming’ from across the house when someone skating on television made a great jump or a tumble. Georgina was also and avid reader and strongly encouraged continuing education in any form to her children.
One sadness in Georgina’s life was the tragic death of her loving father Cecil when she was 9 years old. Although her Mother Emily’s family rallied around the young family, as the oldest of four young children, with a mother whose health was fragile, Georgina’s carefree days were cut short.
She described the saving grace that her faith provided to help her through these dark times. Her faith and the importance she placed on creating and nurturing community would continue to hold high value for her throughout her life. Though she admitted to sometimes struggling to live a life of true compassion and unconditional love, as we all do, her life was committed to striving for this ideal.
Georgina received great joy from her seven grandchildren and her first great grandson, Keegan, whom she was able to meet. She was a very proud Mom and Grandma.
Georgina also loved to travel and along with other destinations, she was able to fulfill a life dream of traveling to the Holy Land on one of her adventures.
Lastly her love for and connection to her homeland of Ireland was abundant and I imagine her now dancing with the leprechauns on the Emerald Isle.
