Notes - Mary Eileen McIver (1910-2000) married John Francis McAvinn (1908- 1982). Eileen (my mother) was born on May 5th, 1910 to Peter D. McIver and Margaret McKenna in Newton PEI. She was the second of thirteen children. At the age of two years old she went to Kinkora to live with her aunt and uncle, Joe and Minnie Campbell. This was to be a temporary arrangement because of the birth of another child but Mom remained there. She went to school in Kinkora, then to Notre Dame Convent in Charlottetown as a boarder and finally graduated as a teacher from Prince of Wales College at the age of nineteen.
Mom taught school for 11years on PEI. Her first school was at Lower Freetown and her last at Stanley Bridge. When she died in 2000 the first bouquet of flowers to come was from the class of 1938 in Stanley Bridge. Mom and Dad were married in Montreal on September 4th, 1940 at Loyola College by Father Reg Johnson who was a cousin of Dad's. Dad had also taught for a number of years on PEI but by then had moved to Ottawa and was working for the Federal Government. Although they lived in Ottawa my mother spent a lot of time back on the Island because of Minnie's health and as a result I was born on the Island in 1943. My two sisters, Joanne and Mary, were born in Ottawa in 1947 and 1951. When Mary started school Mom returned to teaching and taught until she was 65 years old. She loved teaching.
Dad died on January 16th, 1982 unexpectedly of congestive heart failure. Mom remained in her home until the age of 87 years and spent the last 2 ½ years of her life at St. Patrick's Home (where incidentally her sister Bernadine had worked for years). Mom died on February 3, 2000. She was hoping to live long enough to see the new millennium and to reach 90 years old. She achieved the first goal but missed the second by three months. Although she wasn't brought up with her siblings she loved them all and was fiercely loyal to them all. The biggest treat you could give her was a trip to her beloved “Island" and she continued to go well into her eighties. They're missed.
