Notes - Mary was born in 1906, the daughter of James A. Ready and Annie Mullin of Kensington, P.E.I. She was considered a very attractive person who decided to remain single and become actively involved with her community.
Her early education was in Kensington High School, Miscouche Convent, Notre Dame Convent and Prince of Wales College. She taught school in Northam and Cumberland while further equipping herself to teach piano. She taught school in Kensington for 10 years and at the same time taught piano lessons and played for public entertainment, including for silent movies. She took her nurses training in Halifax Infirmary and received her R.N. there. Her nursing career included private nursing in Halifax and Montreal, and service in the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Twenty years before her death she retired to Kensington where she continued to use her many gifts in generous service of the community, following in the tradition of the Ready and Mullin families who were well known for their for their leadership in the community and in the church. She soon became active in the Senior Citizens’ Federation, holding offices both locally and provincially. For many years, even up to a year before her death, through her newspaper column, she kept seniors across the province up to date in the activities of the federation.
That Mary had earned a host of friends through her gift of friendship and her gentle sense of humor was very evident in the many tributes paid her at the time of her wake and funeral.
