- Sister Mary Constance of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception in Saint John died at noon Monday, November 19, 1951, in the Motherhouse, St. Vincent’s Convent, Cliff Street, following a lengthy illness.
Sister Constance, the former Miss Veronica McKenna, was born in Hampton, P.E.I. on January 27, 1871 and baptized by Fr. P. Doyle in St. Malachy’s Church in Kinkora. She was the daughter of the late Francis McKenna and Ann McKeever McKenna and was the last member of her immediate family. Several nieces in Ontario and Western Canada survive. Veronica was the sixth oldest of eight children. Her mother died in 1876 when Veronica was five years old. The 1881 census indicates she was living with a John and Annie Shiels in Lot 26.
Sister Constance entered the novitiate at St. Vincent’s Convent on October 5, 1890 and was professed on August 10, 1892.
For many years she taught in St. Vincent’s School, Cliff Street. Several years of severe illness interrupted her teaching. She spent the last months of her convalescence at St. Patrick’s Orphanage, Silver Falls, and when her strength returned she taught the boys there until ill health again prevented her from teaching. From that time she was a semi-invalid and spent the last year of her life at the Motherhouse. She was seriously ill for almost a month before her death.
The funeral was held on November 21 from St. Vincent’s Convent Chapel following the Solemn High Mass of Requiem celebrated by Reverend T.G. Kennedy, Chaplain of the Convent, assisted by Reverend Dr. J. M. Gallagher, deacon, and Reverend J. P. Quinn Subdeacon. His Excellency Most Reverend P. A. Bray, C.J.M. Bishop of Saint John, was present in the sanctuary and pronounced the final absolution at the conclusion of the Mass. C.S.C., Provincial of the Holy Cross Order, Montreal; Reverend E.E. O’Leary, and Reverend W. J. Mallette were also in the sanctuary.
