Notes - Mary Ellen was living in Hampton with her family when her mother died in 1876, she was 15 years of age and the oldest in the family of eight children. Five years later, she was living in with an Aunt and Uncle, Mary and John Mullin, in Indian River (Lot 19) who were also caring for her younger sister, Maggie. By 1881, John and Mary Mullin also had five children of their own ranging in age from 1-5 years of age.
In 1881, Mary Ellen was a school teacher in Lot 19. On July 9, 1883, she married Bernard Fitzsimmons from Long River, Prince Edward Island, Lot 20. They were married in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Indian River. Over the next 10 years, Mary Ellen and Bernard had five children. Mary Ellen died in 1892.
In 1894, Bernard married Mary Jane Bolger of Hope River. This union had 14 children and they continued to live in Long River. There is an extensive family history on the Fitzsimmons Family and parts of it are available in Des McIvor’s McIver Family History published for the 2004 McIver Reunion.
