  Ernest was the oldest of nine children born to Francis Hugh McKenna and Maggie Fraher. He was 14 years old when his mother died in 1914. He married Bertha Higgins, the sister of his stepmother, Harriet Higgins. They had two children, James and Gertrude. Ernest seemed to be a troubled soul, and in November 1927, he attempted suicide by throwing himself in front of a moving trolley car, while he was out with his wife. He was taken to hospital with several injuries. Ernest later drowned in August 1952.
