Mary Maud McIver[1]

-
Name Mary Maud McIver - Mary Maud McIver (Minnie) was born in Newton, P.E.I. in April 1866. As a child she lost a foot in a farm accident. Her father took her in a horse and buggy to a doctor some miles away with only his hand to stop the bleeding. As a result of this accident, she attended school only in the winter months when she could be driven, because a farmer in those days was too busy in the other seasons. She was 20 years old when she finished a well-rounded education at the one room Newton school.
She studied dressmaking and tailoring. She served for all who came. Many little girls, then, still remember with pride the dresses she made for them. The happy look on their faces was her only reward.
She married Joseph Campbell in 1906 and as she once said there were husbands as good – but none better. When their home in Kinkora was partially finished, she sat on a trunk for a chair and in the winter mornings after breakfast, blew out the kerosene lamp and knit by the light of the fire… energy conservation. Her first earnings were 25 cents for a pair of mittens and the buyer told her she would never be poor. She never was, because she was content with what she had. Her lowly house was open to all from Archbishops to the traveling Indians and their squaws. There was always room at the Inn.
Life for her was never the same after her husband died in 1934. She died in the Charlottetown hospital, August 31, 1945 and was buried in Kinkora cemetery beside her beloved Joseph, a carpenter.
