• Notes

  Peter D. McIver was born in Newton, P.E.I. in April, 1880. He was the youngest child in a family of ten children. He resided on the original McIver homestead where his mother, Emily Harrington, had resided. With his wife Margaret McKenna they raised a family of thirteen children. Being an active farmer he purchased two nearby farms. When once asked how he became so successful, he replied “I guess just hard work and some good management”. As an added interest he raised foxes for a short time. During his lifetime, Peter D. had many challenges and misfortunes to cope with. Despite the burning of a barn and loss of its contents, he quickly rebuilt the barn in 1930 and in 1940 he replaced the old homestead with the present residence of his son Eugene. One of the greatest misfortunes he suffered was the sudden death in 1927 of his wife Margaret, leaving him to cope with the raising of thirteen children, one of whom, Joseph, was killed in World War II. In 1930 he married Annie McGarry who assisted him in all aspects of life until her death in 1953. Annie was born in 1884 in Montague Cross, PE, to Peter McGarry (born 1841 in County Monaghan, Ireland) and Mary Cain in Vernon River. Prior to her marriage to Peter D she worked for the Parish Priest in Kinkora, Father Smith. She had served Father Smith in her home community of Iona and came with him when he was transferred to Kinkora. She died in 1953, at home, after suffering a massive stroke. Despite these trials, Peter D’s Catholic faith was able to sustain him in these ups and downs of life, and because of his good farming methods, was able to offer to his children, the means of an education which allowed some of these children to pursue careers in the teaching and nursing profession. His death on November 29, 1961 at the Charlottetown Hospital came quietly and peacefully. After his death in his will there were bequeaths left to Welfare Agencies, several Island priests, and the immediate family. The family in return donated a gold chalice in his memory to St. Malachy’s Church, Kinkora, P.E.I. Submitted by Bill McIver – Son
